In the external faces made with small square ashlars of tuffaceous stone, it is easier to recognise the vast work of reconstruction achieved by 19th century restorers, and later, by those of the 20th century. The façade in particular, a large part having been reconstructed by Francesco Valenti in the second decade of the 20th century, gives some indication of the arbitrary actions taken due to the impossibility of returning with any certainty to the building’s original appearance. The ancient monastic complex developed round a cloister (dated at the end of the 12th-century), of which only the northern and southern aisles have been preserved. The latter, next to the northern side of the church, was almost completely restored in the 1950s. Like the major example of Monreale, the order of the ogival arcades with double lintels was resumed again, with archivolts and ribs in the intrados, on twin columns with well-made capitals, but they stand out by their size and rich decoration. Between 1987 and 1990 the north wing of the cloister and the body of the structure standing over it have been the object of later interventions of restoration.
